Rural Mailbox Safety

Whereas rural mailboxes have been, and continue to be, a distinctive feature along roadsides of rural America;

Whereas rural Americans construct, decorate, and install mailboxes which often express their individuality and creativity as well as advertise their lifestyle or business interests;

Whereas these mailboxes are necessarily located near road traffic and are often supported by robust structures to withstand vandalism, contact with road maintenance machinery, and the like;

And, whereas, the design, construction, and installation of a mailbox and its supporting structure can contribute to injuries to occupants of motor vehicles that collide with such mailbox structures;

Be it therefore resolved...

...that the National Institute for Farm Safety, Inc., supports the recommendations of the 1994 publication by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials entitled “A Guide for Erecting Mailboxes on Highways”;

And, be it further resolved...

...that the article “Mailboxes: Unrecognized Safety Risks for Motorists” accepted by the NIFS Traffic and Transportation Committee be distributed by the Secretary of NIFS as recommended by the Public Relations Committee to farm media and farm organizations in North America.
