Machinery Guarding

 

Whereas it is recognized that adequate machinery guarding is necessary to protect farm equipment operators and/or others within the immediate vicinity of the machine unit;

Whereas it is generally accepted that complete retrofit is unreasonable and impracticable, including cost;

Be it therefore resolved...

...that the National Institute for Farm Safety, Inc., request by letter, that the U.S. Department of Labor revise its proposed OSHA Guarding Standard to require that equipment manufactured prior to the effective date of the OSHA Guarding regulation be equipped with guarding that is at least equal to that available at the time the unit in question was produced;

And, be it further resolved...

...the Tractor and Machinery Committee of the National Institute for Farm Safety, Inc., strongly urges all farm organizations to recognize this potential retrofit problem and communicate with the Department of Labor regarding the proposed Guarding Standard;

And, be it further resolved...

...that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the appropriate individual or individuals in the farm organizations and in the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
